Masan Mannal Festival

  • Every year on August 17 – 18 of the lunar calendar (for 2 days)
  • Every year on Mannal Pass situated in San 160, Woryeong-dong, Masan-si (Changwon-si, currently), a very special festival is held. Mannal Pass where lies a very sad yet beautiful legend turns into a place of festival where people gather and share happiness of meeting each other on the seventeenth and eighteenth day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar through “Mannal Festival”.

Jinju Nongae Festival

  • Every year on May fourth Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (for 3 days)
  • Every year on May the fourth Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (for 3 days)/ Jinju Nongae Festival was established by cultural artists of Jinju as a joint traditional art festival of “Uiambyeolje” and “Jinju Mask Dance Hanmadang” to commemorate the patriot Nongae, who sacrificed her life for her country and the 70 thousands of soldiers who died in the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.

Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival

  • From Jinjuseong Fortress Battles during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 originates the tradition of setting lanterns (“Yudeung”) afloat on the Namgang River of Jinju, the period of biggest tribulation in the history of Korea. In October 1592, when the General Kim Si-min achieved the great victory at the Jinjuseong Fortress Battle only with the troops of 3,800 soldiers against 20 thousands of Japanese soldiers, “Pungdeungs” (lamps that were flown into the sky with wind power) were used to signal our soldiers outside the fortress as well as to send greetings to the families of soldiers outside the fortress. In the midst of the Year of Gyesa, June 1593, Jinjuseung Fortress ended up in the hands of Japan, and ever since then the custom of setting lanterns afloat on the Namgang River continued a year after a year to commemorate the patriotic sprits of the 70 thousands of deceased soldiers in the battle, which has now succeeded down to the current Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival.

Tongyeong Hansan Daecheop Festival

  • Every year on August 10 – 15 (for 5 days)
  • Every year on August 10 – 15 (for 5 days) / Hansan Daecheop Festival is to celebrate the Great Admiral Yi Sun-shin and the Great Battle of Hansan. Hansan Daecheop Festival is a marine festival held together with the Navy and Marines, and it is the venue of various sea foods and tourism with culture and art from 300 years of history.

Gimhae Gaya Culture Festival

  • Gaya confederacy which lasted for 600 years in the history of Korea had accomplished highly advanced technology in manufacturing various tools and weapons with clay, iron, bronze and etc., and had actively engaged in international trade with exporting the tools and weapons to neighboring countries then, such as Japan, Nakrang, China and etc. Gaya Culture Festival is to inform the great culture of Gaya to the citizens of Gimhae, the birthplace of Gaya and the world.

Miryang Arirang Festival

  • Every year around from the end of April – the beginning of May (for 4 days)
  • As the most representative local folk festival of Gyeongsangnam-do Province, Miryang Arirang Festival is held on four days chosen to be auspicious before the sixteenth day of the fourth month in lunar calendar. The Festival is held every year to commemorate the spirit of loyalty of the Reverend Sa-myeong who fought for the country during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in his status as a monk, the spirit of knowledge and virtue of Kim Jong-jik, the great scholar of Neo-Confucianism, and the spirit of integrity of the Lady Arang who signifies a woman’s fidelity and purity in Korea, and to widely promulgate the Korean local cultural art.

Okpo Sea Battle Festival

  • The Battle of Okpo was the first battle in the period of Japanese Invasion of Korea that Korea encountered in defenseless state, as well as the battle in which Korea succeeded its victory. Okpo Bay is a small bay situated in the East of Geojedo Island where the topography is complex, and is now referred to as the land that saved the nation after the period of Japanese Invasion of Korea. The victory achieved under the command of Admiral Yi Sun-shin was not for any great weapons or experiences in naval battles. Korea (then, “Joseon”) was undergoing unstable political situation with party strife and was not in possession of any proper weapons when it was under attack. However, Korea achieved victory from the solidarity of the soldiers that they will defend the country.

Uibyeong Day Festival

  • Uibyeong Day Festival is a cultural art festival that is held to commemorate the spirit of General Gwak Jae-u and 17 others who led the first nation’s militia (“Uibyeong”) during the period of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The festival is held every year together with the Country People’s Day celebration on April 22nd, the day the militia was established.

Ham-an Water Fireworks

  • Originating from the midst Joseon Dynasty, water firework settled as a traditional folk game of Ham-an region that took place around Buddha’s Birthday in April every year. Water fireworks are done by scattering lanterns that are attached with strings of fire-crackers that are made of charcoal powder from Oak trees into the air above water. The water fireworks are said to originate from Jeong Gu, the governor of Ham-an in Joseon Dynasty in his wishes for the peace for the nation. Water fireworks were forbidden during the period of Japanese Invasion of Korea, but the water fireworks were replayed again in 1985, and the tradition still continues in Ham-an region.

Samil Folk Cultural Festival

  • Samil Folk Cultural Festival is held every year to commemorate the deceased patriots fought against Japan at the Independence Movement in Yeongsan, the birthplace of the March 1st Independence Movement. The Festival is held every year since the year 1961 to widely inform the great culture of Korea with traditional art performances of “Yeongsansoemeoridaegi”, the 25th Important Intangible Cultural Asset and “Yeongsanjuldarigi”, the 26th Important Intangible Cultural Asset.

Sogaya Cultural Festival

  • Every year in April – October, Goseong-gun region
  • Sogaya is a local festival jointly held by Goseoung-gun and the Sogaya Culture Society to promote the harmony and solidarity among the citizens in the legacy of glorious culture and tradition of Sogaya. Sogaya Cultural Festival first started in 1959 under the name of “Independence Art Festival” as a biennial festival, which than was changed to “Gaya Cultural Festival” from the 3rd festival in 1963 and to today’s “Sogaya Cultural Festival” from the 14th festival in 1989 joining with the Country People Sports Day with creation of the Sogaya Culture Society.

Battle of Danghangpo Festival

  • Every year in July (for 2 days), Danghangpo region
  • Battle of Danghangpo Festival is to celebrate the great victor of Admiral Yi Sun-shin and the spirit of the deceased naval forces of Korea who defended and saved the country against the threat of invasion from Japan. The Festival reenacts the victory roar of the Danghangpo Battle, which is to convey the historical lesson to the young generations of Korea and tourists.

Noryang Festival

  • Every year on November 18 – 19 (for 2 days) / Noryang Festival is held in the memory of Admiral Yi Sun-shin who achieved the victory for Korea in the Battle of Noryang which put an end to 7 years of battles during the Japanese Invasion of Korea and passed away in the battle. Every year around the date of his death, the festival is held at the very site of Admiral Yi Sun-shin’s death as well as the site of the battle.

Nammyeong Scholar Culture Festival

  • Every year in the mid-October, Deokcheonseowon region in Sicheon-myeon
  • Every Mid-October, Sicheon-myeon, Deokcheonseowon region / Nammyeong Scholar Culture Festival is one of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism nominated regional folklore festival held in the memory of the life and spirit of Jo Sik, the great scholar of Pragmatic Confucianism in Joseon Dynasty. The Festival is held in every August with various events including epic dramas, launch ceremonies of civil defense squads, symposiums, scholarly cultural experience programs and etc.

Watermill Festival

  • Watermill Festival is held to cherish the virtue of the ancient sage, Choi Chiwon and his contribution in anti-flood afforestation achievement in his post as a Mayor in Silla Dynasty and to promote the local culture, art and sports. The Festival was originally held in Sanglim which is the 154th National Monument and in public arenas under the name of “Cheollyeong” since 1962, which was then developed into “Watermill Festival (Mullebanga Festival)” in 2003 and integrated few different festivals into one festival.
