With the attendance of President Yoon Suk-yeol at the space industry cluster launch ceremony held in Sacheon, the governor of Gyeongsangnam-do stated, “We will build a global multi-functional aerospace city that draws companies and talents, centering around the Korea Aerospace Administration (KAA).”

The space industry cluster launch ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and supervised by the Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeollanam-do, Daejeon, Jinju, and Sacheon governments, served as a platform for sharing the vision, goals, and development direction of Korea's space industry cluster. Among the 450 participants were President Yoon Suk-yeol, Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-ho, Gyeongsangnam-do Governor Park Wan-soo, as well as entrepreneurs, researchers, and students.

During the presidential speech, President Yoon Suk-yeol emphasized that "the space industry cluster would propel Korea toward its ambition of ranking among the top five space powers." He assured strong government support for the success of the space industry cluster triangle system.

President Yoon also promised to "attract KRW 100 trillion investment into Korea's space industry by 2045 and create over 250,000 quality jobs.”

Following the announcement of the space industry cluster vision and plan by the Minister of Science and ICT, the governors of Gyeongsangnam-do, Daejeon, and Jeollanam-do gave their presentations and shared the development plans and future visions for each district.

Gyeongsangnam-do Governor Park Wan-soo emphasized during his presentation, "Gyeongsangnam-do will be at the center of Korea's space economy vision. The Satellite Special Zone will serve as a stepping stone for the leap into a space powerhouse. Centered around KAA, we will create a global multi-functional aerospace city where companies and talents gather.”

On this day, Gyeongsangnam-do proposed four items through presidential office officials. These include the inclusion of the multi-functional aerospace city's transportation infrastructure in the national plan and the designation of the Gyeongnam Aerospace National Industrial Complex as an investment promotion district.

The Satellite Special Zone in Gyeongsangnam-do, with KAA at the center, is set to open in May this year. An investment totaling KRW 257.2 billion will be allocated to build a space environmental testing facility in Jinju, which will serve as a key axis for testing and certification. Additionally, the Satellite Development Innovation Center in Sacheon will function as the hub center for the Satellite Special Zone.

Gyeongsangnam-do serves as the heart of Korea's aerospace industry, accommodating the country's largest aerospace companies such as the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Hanwha Aerospace. It also hosts 104 businesses and 13 research institutions, including Gyeongsang National University, a globally recognized institution in the aerospace field, as well as the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and the Korea Institute of Materials Science. This collective of industry, academia, and research positions the region as the central hub for the space industry.

The establishment of the Satellite Special Zone in Gyeongsangnam-do is anticipated to make a significant contribution to activating the private-led space industry ecosystem. Some of the initiatives include supporting future space technology testing and certification, establishing a microsatellite hub center, and aiding in the development of domestic space parts.

The plan is to enter the global civil market, leveraging Gyeongsangnam-do's concentration of approximately 70% of the aerospace manufacturing industry. Hanwha Aerospace will make efforts to localize civilian and military aircraft engines, while KAI will develop future advanced air mobility airframes, thereby contributing to the formation of a future aerospace ecosystem in the region.

Furthermore, the short-term goal for the construction of the multi-functional aerospace city is to enhance the living conditions of the employees relocating to KAA. In the medium to long term, plans involve upgrading Sacheon Airport to an international airport, expanding the KTX line, and promoting the development of Educational Development Special Zones to establish a self-sufficient city integrating industry, academia, and research functions.

In December 2022, the National Space Committee designated the "space industry cluster" as a hub for fostering the privately-led space industry, selecting Gyeongsangnam-do, Jeollanam-do, and Daejeon as the final locations. Recognizing the current period as the golden time for nurturing the country's space industry, the space industry cluster triangle system* establishment project was confirmed to be exempt from preliminary feasibility studies in August 2023.

* Space industry cluster triangle system: Gyeongsangnam-do for satellites, Jeollanam-do for launch vehicles, Daejeon for research and talent development
