The Gyeongsangnam-do Provincial Government (Governor Park Wan-soo) announced that Korean aquatic products from Gyeongsangnam-do received a great response at the 49th International Food and Beverage Exhibition (FOODEX Japan) held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center from March 5th to 8th. The showcased products included conger eel, seaweed ingredients for gimbap, and oyster chowder.

According to the provincial government, three domestic aquatic product companies participated in FOODEX Japan, concluding an export intent agreement of USD 10 million and conducting export consultations worth USD 16.92 million.

FOODEX Japan witnessed the participation of 2,879 companies from 68 countries worldwide. It has established itself as Asia's largest food exhibition and a competitive arena for global food companies to gauge the popularity of new products.

A total of 10 companies from Gyeongsangnam-do showcased their products in the exhibition, including three aquatic food companies and six agricultural food companies. The separately operated Gyeongsangnam-do pavilion created a synergistic effect as an integrated booth for agriculture and fisheries, attracting the interest of multiple buyers.

Among Gyeongsangnam-do's aquatic products, processed frozen conger eel, easy-to-eat seaweed products containing sea lettuce and kelp, and oyster chowder pouch products attracted the attention of many.

In particular, the conger eel company signed a USD 10 million export intent agreement (MoU) on-site with two Japanese seafood distribution companies, confirming the popularity of Korea's conger eel in Japan. In line with the growing trends favoring eco-friendliness and veganism, as well as the popularity of Korean gimbap, buyers are requesting samples for the frozen seaweed gimbap ingredient set as well as consultations. This package allows for easy gimbap making with just rice and seaweed. The ready-to-eat oyster chowder product also received great responses from both domestic and international buyers for its taste and convenience.

Meanwhile, Gyeongsangnam-do's aquatic product exports in 2023 increased by 3.4% YoY to a record high of USD 251 million. Especially, Japan accounts for 31.8% of the export share as the top destination, followed by China with 25.9%, with oysters and conger eels being the main export items to Japan.

Jo Hyun-jun, Director of Gyeongsangnam-do's Marine and Fisheries Bureau, stated, "This exhibition was worthwhile as not only foreign buyers but also domestic buyers showed high interest in Gyeongsangnam-do's aquatic products such as conger eel and oyster." He added, "Starting this year with the FOODEX Japan, we plan to fully support overseas marketing, host export consultation meetings, and pioneer online markets abroad to achieve the highest ever export of Gyeongsangnam-do's aquatic products.”
