Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the ruler of Japan ordered its entire forces to fight against Joseon Fleet in joint effort with naval forces. However, Wakisaka Yasharu determined to fight alone. On July 7, Wakisaka led the Japanese fleet to leave Jinhae where the commanding base of the Japanese naval force at the time was stationed. The Wakisaka fleet was stationed in Gyeonnaeryang around the Geojedo area. A shepherd who saw the Japanese fleet informed of it to the Joseon Fleet. Joseon Fleet was to induce the Japanese fleet to broad open sea for Gyeonnaeryang had narrow sea that the panokseons had hard time changing the directions.

Furthermore, the formations were likely to run away to the shore if they were cornered from the battle.
Divisions organized in several vessels went toward Gyeonnaeryang, and the rest of the fleet was waiting in front of the sea of Hansando. Divisions attached the Japanese fleet but falsely retreated for luring the Japanese fleet out of the area. Admiral Yi sun-shin ordered to undertake 'Hakik-jin', one of the most famous strategy of the Admiral in this battle. Joseon Fleet had the Hakik-jin and opened its guns to attack, and in its first attack, 2~3 Japanese battle ships caught fire and sank down in a moment of time. The Joseon Fleet focused on the attack to the commander's ship and surrounded the Japanese fleet for intense attack. On the verge of defeat in the battle, the Japanese General Wakisaka Yasharu led 14 ships and retreated.

When the Joseon Fleet was taking a rest in Gyeonnaeryang, the scouting ship reported that there were some 40 ships of Japanese fleet were berthed in Angolpo on July 9. At the time, the Japanese fleet berthing in Angolpo was the joint fleet of Guki Yoshitaka and Gato Yoshiyaki. These two Japanese generals were in the war following the Yakisaka fleet on July 7. On July 10, the Joseon Fleet was headed toward Angolpo. Joseon Fleet tried to lure the Japanese fleet out to open sea since the water level in front of the port was too low for the panokseons to approach. However, the Japanese fleet stayed in the port and responded by shooting from the land. Admiral Yi sun-shin sent his divisions to sink the ships berthed on the port. Many Japanese forces were killed and the survivors retreated to the land. After a half of the Japanese fleet sank, Joseon Fleet was concerned of well-being of the lay people and they left the battle ground. The fleet of Admiral Yi sun-shin returned to its main quarter on July 13.
