On July 16, 1597, Won Gyun who became the Commander of Three-province Navy was thoroughly defeated in the Chilcheonryang Battle and died in the battle. The battle ships of the Joseon Fleet that reached for most of approximately 160 ships were sunk in the Chilcheonryang Battle. During the battle, General Bae Seol led 12 battle ships to escape the site. After the Chilcheonryang Battle, the Joseon Dynasty Royal Court appointed Admiral Yi Sun-sin as the Commander of Three-province Navy again. Therefore, Admiral Yi Sun-sin gathered his generals and naval force under his command and came down to the battle fields. On August 19, the Admiral acquired the battle ships that General Bae Seol led in Hoeryeongpo, and gathered food, arrow, bow and others.

King Seonjo sent a document to Admiral Yi Sun-sin to fight as army not as a navy, but Admiral replied with his famous phase in Your Highness, I still have 12 battleships, and sent it back to King Seonjo. Admiral Yi Sun-sin kept on moving the bases of the naval force toward the west.

On September 16, the scouting ship reported that numerous Japanese battle ship was heading toward the main quarter of the Joseon naval force. Therefore, Yi Sun-sin led his fleet and waited for the Japan on the sea of the naval base in Hanam-gun of today. 133 Japanese battle ships entered into the narrow sea of Uldolmok in between Jindo and the Hwawon Peninsula. The lowest water level of Uldolmok was approximately 1.9m and the speed of tidal flow was up to 11.5 knot. The Japanese forces separated their battle ships and Adake Ship that could not come into Uldolmok was waiting outside of battle site. 133 battle ships with relatively smaller size passed Uldolmok and attacked the Joseon Fleet.

Then, Yi Sun-sin ordered to form the Ilja-jin with ships in straight line. After engaging in the battle, other generals were hesitating to attach but the ship of Yi Sun-sin led the attack on the front line. Yi Sun-sin ordered other battle ships to attached and headed into the Japan. After the tide turned, the remaining battle ships of the Joseon Fleet also attacked after Admiral Yi Sun-sin. In a moment of time, 31 Japanese battle ships were destroyed and the Japanese forces were retreated in the evening. The victory was gained for relentless attack of Admiral Yi Sun-sin.
